It is with great sadness that our community learned of Professor Roy
Mersky's death on May 6th. Roy held a faculty appointment in the School of
Information and was instrumental in advancing the school's program in legal
librarianship that is now ranked #3 in the nation. Roy was a giant,
intellectually, professionally and personally. He was deeply committed to
the field, to justice, and to our education of the finest legal information
specialists in the world. More than this, he led by example in all facets of
his amazing life. He was a truly unique individual and the world seems a
darker place with his passing.
Roy held the Harry Reasoner Regents Chair in Law Director of Research and
was Tarlton Law Library Director. Professor Mersky received his B.S. in
1948; a J.D. in 1952; and, a Master's degree in Library Science in 1953. A
strong human rights activist and committed advocate of legal libraries, Roy
helped shape the careers of hundreds of the leading law librarians in the
nation both through his classes and his long-term mentoring.
