Introduction to Career Services
The iSchool Career Services Office is a collaborative partnership with faculty and staff to empower students to achieve their dreams beyond academics.
Our goal is to prepare students for the professional world. To that end, we provide education on the vast array of career paths in information studies, individualized coaching sessions, as well as connections with resources, people, and opportunities.
In addition to direct student services, we work with employers to facilitate their success in recruiting iSchool talent. We actively market the skill sets of our students and alumni to employers and seek to attract new organizations, especially emerging and non-traditional industries that may be less familiar with the value of an iSchool education.
Careers Newsletter
All incoming students will be automatically registered to receive email newsletters from the iSchool Career Services Office (msis-career or docis-career lists). You will have the ability to unsubscribe.
Is your e-mail on file? You should have already received some emails from Carla Criner, the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and if you did receive those messages disregard this warning. If you elected for your contact information to be kept confidential by the University or the Graduate School and not listed in the UT Directory, your email might not be on the official student list that the iSchool maintains. This may result in you missing important e-mails from the iSchool. If you are not receiving emails, make sure that the Graduate Coordinator, Carol Carreon, has your email on file. You may also need to manually add yourself to pertinent listservs like msis-career or the-insider by visiting UT Lists.
To-Do's and Notes For Incoming Students
- Take a moment to Review the New Student Handout to get a jump on graduate student employment and transitioning to Austin.
- We will be replacing the current JobWeb with a new Career Management System. The expected release date for the new system is August 14th. The new iSchool Career Management System (CMS) includes a sophisticated job board, event management, a resource library, an employer database and more customized features. You will get an introductory message explaining the conversion and then a welcome message with the login link, your username, and password.
- It’s never too early to schedule your first appointment—call us at 471-8806.
Career Services Bootcamp
Two years of graduate school goes by fast and to help you capitalize on your education the iSchool will host a Career Bootcamp Orientation to jump start your career development process. In this bootcamp, the iSchool Career Services Director, Tara Iagulli, will lead you through the basics of resumes, cover letters, job searching, interviewing as well as the mentor program and additional UT campus resources. You will also be introduced to our new career management system (expected release date of Aug 14th). Attending one Career Bootcamp Orientation is required of all incoming (new) master’s students and for your convenience the session will be offered multiple times.
