Program

The Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in Conservation of Library and Archival Materials emphasizes the application of conservation science and conservation treatment procedures.

Please refer to the list of required and elective courses for the CAS in Conservation of Library and Archival Materials. Typically, a full-time student (taking 9 to 12 hours each semester) will complete the MSIS and the CAS in 2.5 to 3 years. A student studying for an MSIS and a CAS in Conservation must complete a minimum of 54 credit hours.

Internship

A nine-month internship forms the culminating experience for conservation students. The goal is continuing development of treatment skills under professional supervision in the working environment of a recognized book or document conservation laboratory. This crucial opportunity allows conservator students to expand and consolidate their experience and polish their skills. Recent students have held internships at the Library of Congress, the National Archives and Records Administration, Harvard University, Columbia University, the Newberry Library, and the New York Historical Society.
