The Master of Science in Information Studies (MSIS) curriculum has changed and the new requirements will be effective for all students enrolling for the Fall 2011 semester and beyond. If you enrolled in the MSIS program prior to FALL 2011, please refer to the previous curriculum requirements listed below. If you enrolled in the 2010-2011 academic year, please contact your academic advisor and determine which curriculum requirement you will follow.

2011-2013 GRADUATE CATALOG -- CURRENT MSIS CURRICULUM

Courses in the Master of Science in Information Studies curriculum should be viewed in terms of three elements:

  • Core - Required courses that all School of Information students must take early in their program (9 semester credit hours)
  • Electives - Elective courses (27 semester credit hours)*
  • Exit courses - A Capstone experience or "exit" course plus concurrent registration in INF 181E (4 semester credit hours)*

Core (9 semester credit hours)

All students must take the following courses during their first year of studies (9 semester credit hours):

Elective courses (27 credit hours)

Electives are to be taken from the range of courses offered by the School of Information. Students may take up to 12 graduate credits OR up to nine (9) upper-division undergraduate credits at UT-Austin outside the School with the permission of their advisors. A student may also complete up to six (6) semester credit hours of Individual Studies. without special permission of the GSC.

Exit Courses and the Capstone Experience (4 semester credit hours)

Each student must complete his or her Capstone Experience under one of the Capstone Experience Courses. The student must also be registered concurrently in INF 181E - Individual Studies in Electronic Portfolio.

Students in the School Librarian Certification Program may meet the Capstone requirement by completing the Practicum in School Libraries course.

2008-2011 GRADUATE CATALOG -- PREVIOUS MSIS Curriculum

  • Core - Required courses that all School of Information students must take early in their program (13 semester credit hours)
  • Electives - Elective courses (24 semester credit hours)*
  • Exit courses - A Capstone experience or "exit" course (3 semester credit hours)*

Core (13 semester credit hours)

All students must take the following courses during their first year of studies (13 semester credit hours):

Elective courses (24 credit hours)

Electives are to be taken from the range of courses offered by the School of Information. Students may take up to 6 credits with appropriate courses outside the School. A student may also complete up to 12 semester credit hours of Individual Studies. The student should discuss these choices with his or her advisor.

Exit Courses and the Capstone Experience (3 semester credit hours)

Each student must complete his or her Capstone Experience under one of the Capstone Experience Courses.

Students in the School Librarian Certification Program and the Preservation and Conservation Studies Program may meet the Capstone requirement by fulfilling the practicum for their specific program.
