Guatemala

Limited access, but growing! A few commercial service providers have come up since GUATEL announced their official ISP regulations on April 13, 1996.

Meanwhile, "MayaNet" provides the first academic and research connection. The following institutions participate in this project (all in Guatemala City) and are just starting to set up their web servers:

El Salvador

Several institutions operate uucp connections. There is Internet access via X.25 or direct dial-in operated by ANTEL (the Salvadoran telephone company) via RACSA in Costa Rica. Since December 1995, there is a TCP/IP link at 64K operated by ANTEL via Costa Rica, which permits access to "es.com.sv" addresses and hooks up the following institutions through dedicated lines:

SVNet manages the "sv" domain and assigns IP numbers. [Top of Page]
Honduras

Academic connection operational since May 31, 1995.
First web server,
www.hondunet.net, is operating since September, 1995.
Hondutel (the national telephone company) will provide the necessary satellite link free of charge for two years for the academic participants. Commercial service providers started operating in mid-1996. Click here for a list of commercial providers. Participating institutions:

Nicaragua

Connected via Costa Rica to the UNI (Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería) and other educational centers since March, 1994. Click here for a list of commercial providers.

Costa Rica

Bitnet node implemented in 1990. First Internet node in Central America, operational at the UCR (Universidad de Costa Rica) since January 26, 1993. Commercial services available since July, 1994. Panamá

Connection via microwave link via Costa Rica for educational institutions since June, 1994, including the Universidad Tecnologica and the Red Academica Panamena (Academic Network). Various satellite links for ISPs, three providers of satellite links for voice, data, video, and fax: Intel (Panama's PTT), TelPan, y Charter Communications.
