IMMROTH OFFERS INFORMATION SESSION FOR SAN ANTONIO STUDENTS

Professor Barbara Immroth will present information on how to become a Learning Resources/School Library Media Specialist at two sessions in San Antonio. Dr. Immroth will highlight the UT MLIS degree and LR endorsement programs being offered by interactive video. The first session will be on Wednesday, December 3, 3:00-5:30 p.m., at Northside Activity Center, 7001 Culebra at Loop 410, and the other will be on Thursday, December 4, 3:00-5:30 p.m. at the ESC Region 20, 1314 Hines Avenue. STATE LIBRARY OFFERS WORKSHOP ON GOVERNMENT INFORMATION

A Texas State Library Continuing Education workshop - “Cutting the Red Tape: How to Access Government Information on the Internet” - will be held on Thursday, December 4 in Austin. The Speaker will be Sue Polanka, Continuing Education Consultant with the Texas State Library. She has presented workshops on Texas electronic resources, database searching, and advanced Internet topics to librarians in Texas. Before joining the State Library’s CE staff, she was the Texas Documents Librarian for the Reference/Documents Collection at the State Library.

1998 ALISE CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN NEW ORLEANS

The 1998 ALISE Annual Conference is scheduled for January 6-9 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in New Orleans. Those planning to attend should make their reservations soon. The room block at the Royal Sonesta Hotel will be held until December 6. ALISE attendees can get a single or double rate of $145 plus taxes.

GRADUATE STUDIES OFFERS DISSERTATION WRITING WORKSHOP

As part of its effort to provide professional development opportunities for graduate students, the Office of Graduate Studies will hold a Dissertation Writing Workshop on February 27, 1998, 1:00-4:30 p.m. in Main 212. This workshop will introduce doctoral students to many of the issues and problems encountered in the process of “doing a dissertation.”

Students will receive advice from the Graduate School about how to navigate the dissertation bureaucracy. In addition, they will have the opportunity to listen to some of the University’s most experienced and successful dissertation supervisors.

Outstanding Dissertation Awards Program
OM Association, Inc.
The Association honors doctoral candidates whose dissertations significantly advance the knowledge and understanding of education theories, concepts, and practices related to the mission of OM Association. OM’s mission includes the encouragement and development of cooperation, self-respect, and the appreciation and understanding of others. Native American Summer Congressional Internship
The Morris K. Udall Foundation
This program places 12 Native American university students in congressional offices for ten weeks in the summer for intensive internship in Washington, D.C. To request an application, call 319/337-1650 or fax 319/337-1204. Deadline: January 9, 1998

MLA Scholarship for Minority Students
Medical Library Association
Award of $2,000 to encourage candidates who show excellence in scholarship and potential for accomplishment in health sciences librarianship. The applicant must be entering an ALA-accredited school or must have completed no more than half the program. Thematic Fellowship Program on Migration for 1998-99
Office of Graduate Studies

This is a program of thematic fellowships for UT doctoral students writing dissertations on topics related to migration. The refers to movements of peoples in either the contemporary world or in historic perspective. Migrations of animal species are also appropriate topics. Students from any program are eligible providing that their dissertation topic lies within the overall theme. The stipend will be no less than $11,000 with a $500 medical benefit. Deadline for applications is December 15, 1997.

EBSCO/NMRT Scholarship

OERI Fellowships
U.S. Department of Education, Office of Education Research and Improvement

E.J. Josey Scholarship Award
Black Caucus of the American Library Association

Three scholarship awards of $2,000 will be given to African American citizens of the U.S. or Canada enrolled in graduate ALA-accredited LIS program. Deadline: December 15, 1997

1998 Karen Sternheim Memorial Scholarship Southern California Chapter/Special Libraries Association
Award of $1,500 to a master’s degree student in ALA-accredited LIS program who is a permanent resident of California or Nevada. No geographic restriction on the school in which the student is enrolled. Contact Wayne Wilson, 213/730-9696, wwilson@mailgate.aafla.com for more information.

LITA/OCLC Minority Scholarship in Library and Information Technology
Library and Information Technology Association, a division of American Library Association

This scholarship is designed to encourage the entry of qualified persons into the library automation field. The committee seeks those who plan to follow a career in the field and are qualified members of a principal minority group and a U.S. or Canadian citizen. The scholarship of $2,500 is provided by OCLC in conjunction with LITA. Deadline for applications is April 1, 1998.

LAMA/YBP Student Writing and Development Award
Library Administration and Management Association and YBP, Inc.

This award is given to honor the best article on a topic in the area of library administration and management written by a student enrolled in a library and information studies graduate program. The winning article will be published in the Fall, 1998, issue of Library Administration & Management. The award recipient will also receive a travel grant of up to $1,000, funded by YBP, Inc., to be used to attend the 1998 ALA Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship
Chinese American Librarians Association
The CALA will receive applications for this annual award of $500 through February 16, 1998. Applicants should be a student of Chinese heritage who is currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited library school as a full-time student. The scholarship is designed to encourage the development of leadership in Chinese American librarianship. The winner will be announced by April 30, 1998, and the award will be presented at the ALA conference in Washington, D.C.

NASIG Conference Student Grant
To encourage LIS students to enter some aspect of serials work. Provides the opportunity to attend a NASIG conference with all expenses paid. GRADUATION FILING FOR DOCTORAL STUDENTS DUE JANUARY 26

Any doctoral student planning to graduate in Spring 1998 should pick up a graduation packet in Main 101. The deadline for returning the degree candidate card and paying the fee is January 26, 1998. The deadline for submitting the dissertation and other documents is May 8.

GSLIS Master’s students Helen Baer and Michael Pasqualoni have joined the editorial board of the “Katherine Sharp Review,” a peer reviewed electronic journal at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, that publishes student research in library and information science.
